The details

The places

The Kathmandu Valley holds seven World Heritage monuments: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath stupas, Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. A day can take in two or three of them at a calm pace; two or three days take in all seven, with time for the old courtyards and workshops between them.

How the day works

I meet you at your hotel. We walk where we can and take a car or taxi between the squares, paid at the local fare. Entry fees are paid at each gate; I help you at the counters. See the entrance fees.

Visiting with respect

Cover shoulders and knees, take off your shoes where you are asked, and leave leather outside at Pashupatinath. Photos are welcome in the squares but not inside the shrines, and at the cremation ghats only from a respectful distance.

Tours

See the city tours: day tours, overnight trips such as Changu Narayan and Nagarkot, and round trips to Pokhara, Lumbini and Chitwan.

Questions people ask

Are entry fees included?

No. They are paid at each gate, and they differ for foreigners, SAARC and Nepali visitors. I help you at the ticket counters.

What should I wear?

Cover shoulders and knees, take off your shoes where you are asked, and leave leather items outside at Pashupatinath.

How do we travel between the sites?

On foot where we can, and by a private car or taxi between them, paid at the local fare. I can book a car for you.

Can I take photos everywhere?

In the squares and courtyards, yes. Not inside the shrines, and at the Pashupatinath cremation ghats only from a respectful distance.

Can the day be changed to suit us?

Yes: slower, fewer stairs, more food, more photography. Tell me what you like and I plan it with you.
