What Larke La is

Larke La is the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit, at about 5,106 m. It joins the Budhi Gandaki valley on the east to the Bimthang valley on the west. At the top there are prayer flags and a wide view of big peaks: Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru and Annapurna II. For most walkers it is the hardest and the most important day of the whole circuit.

The crossing

The day begins at Dharamsala, also called Larke Phedi, a cold camp of simple lodges. Most groups leave around four in the morning with head torches. The climb is long and gentle, over moraine and old snow, with a few false tops. It takes three to four hours for most people.

The way down to Bimthang is steeper and harder on the knees, often on loose stone or snow. It takes another three to four hours. In total it is a day of eight to ten hours. It is not a climb with ropes, but it is a serious mountain day.

Honest notes

  • Do not cross if you have a strong headache, sickness or confusion. Go down to Samdo instead. Read my notes on altitude sickness.
  • The weather can change quickly. Fresh snow can close the pass for a day or more. Listen to your guide and to the lodge owners.
  • Bring warm gloves, a good jacket and microspikes in the cold months. The wind on top is strong.
  • Start early. Afternoon cloud and wind make the descent harder and colder. Check the best time to trek before you plan.
