What Thorong La is
The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit, and one of the most-crossed high passes in the world. The trail climbs from the Manang side and drops steeply to Muktinath, a holy place for both Hindus and Buddhists.
The crossing
Walkers leave High Camp or Thorong Phedi very early, often before 5 am, to cross before the strong wind of late morning. The trail is a long climb over stony ground, with false tops that test your patience. At the pass there are prayer flags and a sign, and usually a lot of happy, tired people.
Honest notes
- This is a serious altitude day. Only cross if you are well. If you have a headache or feel strange at High Camp, wait or go down. See altitude sickness on Nepal treks.
- Snow can close the pass, especially in winter and sometimes after autumn storms. A good itinerary has a spare day.
- The descent is hard on the knees. Use trekking poles.
