From Birgunj to Barpak: A Ride Through Memory and Mountains
My name is Rujan Neupane, and like many riders, I find that the road has a way of writing stories no notebook ever could. My last visit to Birgunj remains etched clearly in my mind — the warm, humid air of the Terai, the bustling border town energy, and the easy rhythm of life in the plains. It was a place that felt both familiar and fleeting, a brief stop before the real adventure began.
Right after leaving Birgunj, I set my sights on a destination that had been calling me for a long time: Barpak, in the Gorkha district. Anyone who knows Nepal’s geography knows this isn’t just a change of location — it’s a complete transformation of landscape, climate, and mood. Within hours, the flat, sweltering plains gave way to winding hill roads, and soon after, the rugged, dramatic terrain of the mountains.
The ride itself became the story. As I left the heat of Birgunj behind, the air grew cooler with every kilometer climbed. The roads narrowed, twisted, and tested both my machine and my nerve. Past Gorkha bazaar, the path toward Barpak grew steeper and rougher — broken patches of road, loose gravel, and switchbacks that demanded full attention. Yet every challenging turn was rewarded with views that made the difficulty worthwhile: terraced fields cascading down hillsides, scattered stone-roofed houses, and the occasional glimpse of snow-capped peaks in the distance.
Barpak itself carries a weight of history. As the epicenter of the devastating 2015 earthquake, the village tells a story of destruction and, more powerfully, of resilience and rebuilding. Riding into Barpak, I could see how the community had risen — new structures built with care, rebuilt homes that honored both safety and tradition, and a quiet strength in the people who continued to call this place home despite everything they had endured.
Standing there, with my motorcycle resting after the long climb, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. This wasn’t just about covering distance on two wheels — it was about connecting two very different worlds within the same country: the warm plains of Birgunj and the resilient highlands of Barpak. The contrast between where I started and where I ended up reminded me of how diverse and layered Nepal truly is, even within a single journey.
Motorcycle rides like this one are never just about the destination. They’re about the moments in between — the tea stops along the way, the conversations with locals, the small victories over difficult roads, and the personal growth that comes from pushing through challenges. From the sultry streets of Birgunj to the storied hills of Barpak, this ride became more than transportation. It became a reflection of my own journey — testing limits, embracing change, and discovering the quiet resilience that exists in both the land and its people.
